Investigative journalists working with satellite imagery often deal with complex workflows, large datasets, and disconnected tools. The original platform made it difficult to maintain overview, compare imagery, and manage investigations efficiently.

Key challenges included:

  • Fragmented workflows across multiple tools
  • Limited ways to explore and compare satellite imagery
  • Lack of spatial context during investigations
  • Complex interfaces that slowed down research processes
  • Difficulty organizing investigations and image assets

The challenge was to design a platform that supports deep investigative work without overwhelming users with technical complexity.

The redesigned Vertical52 platform creates a more focused and intuitive environment for investigative journalism with satellite imagery.

The new experience enables journalists to:

  • Manage investigations and imagery within one centralized workspace
  • Switch between list, grid, and map views depending on investigative needs
  • Compare and layer satellite images directly within the platform
  • Navigate large datasets with greater clarity and control
  • Access spatial analysis tools without disrupting their workflow

By reducing complexity and improving usability, the redesign allows journalists to focus less on managing tools and more on uncovering stories through satellite data.
